Germanus of Constantinople
- Germanus of Constantinople
(c. 634–c. 733)
Patriarch and Liturgist.
Germanus was Patriarch of Constantinople between 715 and 730. One of his first acts as Patriarch was to condemn the Monothelite heresy – the belief that Jesus Christ, although he had two natures, had but a single will. He came into conflict with the Emperor Leo III over the question of icons. The Emperor legislated against the veneration of pictures; Germanus was determined in his opposition to the decree and was eventually compelled to resign his office. He was the author of seven homilies on the Blessed Virgin Mary and was a promoter of her cult. He also probably wrote the Historia Mystica Ecclesiae Catholicae, an important liturgical work.
